Augustus Kaufman

Augustus Kaufman

Age: 36

Allegiance: Union

Highest Rank: Private

Unit: Company G, 140th New York Volunteer Infantry

Occupation: Basketmaker

Buried: Andersonville, GA

Enlisted January 4, 1864 at Rochester with Capt. Roswell Hart, for a period for three years. At time of enlistment was 36 years old, 5' 6" tall and described as having dark complexion, black eyes and brown hair. He gave his birthplace as Switzerland and his occupation as Basketmaker. He received the following: advance pay of $13, a "premium" of $2.00 and a bounty of $60.00. He was assigned to Co. G of the 140th NY volunteer infantry.

New York State's Adjutant General's report states captured in action at North Ann River, Va., on May 16, 1864; however the date and place do not match. The 140th was engaged on the North Anna River between May 23 - 27, with the primary battle being fought on May 23. Continued skirmishing and picket duty also caused casualties to the regiment in the form of men taken prisoner; five men were listed as being captured on May 26, 1864, which most likely is the true date of Kaufman's capture.

He died at Andersonville Prison on Sept. 17, 1864 of scorbutus (a dietary deficiency related to scurvy.) He was buried in Grave #9060.
